Deadly Car Accident in Miami Beach
On February 24, 2022, at around 6:30 p.m., outdoor diners at Call Me Gaby on Washington Avenue in South Beach were stunned when a silver Bentley plowed into them. The driver of the Bentley was allegedly trying to parallel park, as reported by WSVN news.
The fatal crash took the life of a 67-year-old man and injured 6 others. Several were taken to the hospital. People injured in the accident ranged in age, with the youngest being a 3-year-old child.
Previous Legal Trouble for the Driver
While law enforcement officers investigating the accident indicated that the driver did not appear to be impaired, she does have a previous arrest for driving under the influence.
According to WSVN reporting, the 75-year-old driver of the silver Bentley had previously been arrested for a DUI. The police report in that incident indicated that her blood alcohol level was over two times the legal limit.
Driving under the influence or while impaired by alcohol is a serious offense that can result in both criminal and civil penalties. Individuals injured by a drunk driver might be entitled to compensation by filing a personal injury lawsuit.
Investigation Ongoing
The investigation into the crash is still ongoing. It is believed that the elderly driver was attempting to parallel park her car near where diners were eating. While in reverse, it appears that she stepped on the accelerator sending the vehicle onto the sidewalk. The Bentley jumped a curb, ultimately coming to a stop after hitting several tables, pinning multiple victims beneath the vehicle.
Good samaritans were able to lift the car helping to pull several injured parties from the wreckage. One man succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. He was remembered by friends and family as a “generous” and “selfless man.”
