Tourist Dies in Water Slide Incident Off Crab Island
A man visiting from Texas died in late 2022 after sliding head-first off a water slide attached to a rental pontoon boat. The incident occurred in Choctawhatchee Bay in Okaloosa County, Florida, according to the Miami Herald.
The man, a 63-year-old father and grandfather, slid off the slide into the water below which was approximately three to four feet deep. It is believed that at the time he struck his head on the bottom of the bay. He did not resurface, causing concern to family members who witnessed the tragedy.
Local law enforcement and rescue agencies arrived on the scene to attempt to save him, but he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Dangers at Crab Island
Crab Island, off the Florida Panhandle, is a popular tourist spot, but as noted by the Herald, is considered dangerous. The waters around the island are often crowded with “heavy boat traffic, strong currents, and sudden drop-offs.” The death is not the first one to occur in the area. At least three other people were killed in boating or water accidents last year.
The island is a well-known sandbar located near Destin, Florida. It is surrounded by shallow waters approximately one to four feet deep. There are usually countless boats anchored around floating food vendors. Pontoon boats are one of the most popular rentals in the area but swimming is not recommended since the currents are generally too strong.
