Boat Almost Fully Submerged Near Matheson Hammock Marina

Earlier this month, a boat near Biscayne Bay flipped, injuring two people. The accident, which initially occurred on Friday, September 8, 2023, happened close to the Matheson Hammock Marina.

As reported by NBC6, witnesses say the vessel “lifted into the air, spun and then sank.” It is not clear what caused the boat to launch and then sink. Two people onboard the vessel were found in the water shortly after the boat became submerged. Local law enforcement was notified about the accident and is investigating the matter.

Two Injured in Boating Accident

The two injured in the boating accident were taken to Jackson South Medical Center. The brother of one of the two victims reportedly used his own boat to bring the two men back to shore. One of the boaters was critically injured and is on a ventilator.

The accident happened during a “meetup of high-performance boaters,” according to the brother who rescued the boaters. He explained to NBC6 that the vessel involved in the accident was a Skater Powerboat.

Unknown Cause of the Accident

It has been widely reported that the weather and water conditions were calm the day of the accident, so it is unclear what caused the boat to capsize. The victims were experienced boaters, familiar with racing and speedboats, as reported by others. Miami-Dade Police and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are investigating the incident.

Common Causes of Boating Accidents

Boating accidents may have a number of causes. Depending on the circumstances, it may take an in-depth investigation to determine who or what was responsible for the crash.

Common causes of boating accidents include:

  • Inclement weather
  • Rough waters
  • Malfunctioning boat parts
  • Objects in the water
  • Congestion
  • Speeding
  • Operator inexperience
  • Impairment
  • Lack of a proper lookout

In popular boating areas, including those throughout South Florida, congestion can play a major role in some collisions. Having too many boats in an area can make it difficult to navigate safely through a corridor or waterway. In the case above, however, it is not clear what caused the boat to capsize.

Boating Safety Tips for South Florida

Boating is a favorite pastime of many South Florida residents and visitors. The waters are usually filled year-round with boating enthusiasts. To keep yourself and others safe, it is important to remember to always wear a life jacket while boating. Boaters should also appoint a lookout and make sure that they are following all local guidelines. Things can change in an instant on the water, so it is essential to remain alert and prepared for an emergency.
